The last few weeks have been so magical and fun! Christmas with lots of Irish visitors and fantastic quality family time. Mexico vacation for my brother in laws wedding was amazing. Lots of relaxing and enjoying.

Now I look forward to a New Year with lots of already exciting things happening including a new baby at the beginning of May.
Creatively I have so much bursting in me and so look forward to sharing them with you here. Here is a list of some of my creative resolutions for this New Year.

Introducing HomeSpun

Over the coming days I want to introduce you to a new project I have been working on. My friend Kathlene and I have started a new children's clothes line called HomeSpun. Are concept is to create a line of clothing using recycled fabrics and clothes. We are also working on a Vintage line too which I will blog about later.
We collected special pieces of used children's clothes and re-purposed them by adding applique and embellishments. This season we concentrated on a woodland theme. At the moment we have them available to buy on our etsy store but hope to have them available in LA stores soon.

I'm so excited to be involved with Hope in the City again this year. Its a Fashion Show event that myself and my friends organize. Its part of LA Fashion Week this year. I've been organizing the experimental section of the event. Where we asked 20 designers to make a garment out of paper using LA Weekly magazines. Can't wait to show you the images of the event.

Things I dream of making.....

Here are 3 things that I'm dreaming I could make or attempt to make in the future.

First these giant woolen poufs from Pedlars. They remind me of the small wool balls I used to make as a kid by wrapping wool around 2 cardboard circles.

Second is this amazing yoyo quilt from anthropol0gie - I have actually started to make this one but we'll see if I get to finish or not!

Third is have always wanted to learn to crochet and these designs by Emma Lamb inspire me so much. Check out her etsy store for more. Some day I'm just going to by a crochet book and some crochet hooks and learn....!

Misha Lulu

One of my favorite children clothes designer has to be Misha Lulu and she happens to be based here in LA too. I had the pleasure of meeting Karen Salazar and her husband Joe at Unique Craft fair. We did an exchange - I got the most amazing clothes for Sienna and she choose a bird mobile and a few other bits from my collection.
Since than Sienna hasn't worn a dress more - I love it. I love everything about their collection. The modern colors and amazing fabrics and patterns. All the applique work is so inspirational. Karen is from El Salvador and you can see the cultural influence in her work. She also has a gorgeous daughter who inspires her work too.

Here are a few images from their upcoming Spring 10 collection and of course Sienna wearing her Misha LuLu dress and trousers.

She has a great blog and website. The website has a great surplus store where you can buy fabric and trims all sorts of fun things.

For my birthday I got a gift voucher for Avoca Handweavers. Avoca is one of my favorite stores in Ireland. It has the most inspiring interior products and mixes country kitchen with a modern twist. I bought some fabulous things including some rice products, this amazing paper doll set for Sienna and of course a delicious goats cheese treat for lunch.

Heather Finn Knitwear Designer

When I was back in Dublin I got to spend sometime with my college friend Heather Finn. She is a very talented knit wear designer and has a studio space in her home in Dublin. I just love Heather's use of colour and her fresh modern look of feminine knits.
It was great chatting and catching up, sharing our hopes for the future. Heather has a great website with lots of information about her work and were you can buy it.

Charlotte Jane Mac Donald

It was great to find fresh inspiration when I was back in Ireland. I was flicking through some of my Mum's interior magazines and came across Charlotte Mac Donald's work. I was excited to discover that she also studied textile design in my college - National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin, Ireland.

I love the delicate feel of her work and of course the cupcakes! Her use of vintage kitchen textiles with subtle beautiful fabrics is divine. Her website has lots of great images of her portfolio including her printed fabrics. Love it!

It has been great connecting with Charlotte and I'm now following her blog.

Its been a busy month of travel and I'm so happy to be finally back LA. I love the start of New Years - goal setting and starting new adventures. But first I need to recap on my travel month.

My husband's family moved to Warsaw, Poland about a year ago and we decided to go and visit for Christmas. I had never been to any Eastern European countries before and fell for its architectural charm. Even with jetlag and family commitments I mentioned to get out in the Old City with my camera and try to capture things that inspired me. I enjoyed peeking through windows and beautiful shapes in the buildings.
It was a wonderful Christmas journey and was nice to have frosty cold mornings that we don't seem to get in LA.

I part of the planning team for Hope in the City Fashion Show and I did some research on dresses made out of paper for some ideas for the Fashion Show. The first dress is from Papier Couture, the next dress is made out of a phone book, third is from newspaper, isn't this just amazing. The last image was my favorite dress from the newspaper challenge on this season's project runway.

DIY Gift making Class - West LA

The Holidays are fast apporaching and I hope this year to support all things handmade! I encourage you to buy handmade and make your own gifts this year. Everyone loves to receive something original and handmade so I am teaching a DIY Holiday Gift Class.

It will take place in Westwood Los Angeles

December 12th from 10am until 1pm.

$40 for the class (this includes enough materials to make at least 2 gifts and complete instructions and tutorial).

Its pumpkin crazy here at the moment. I must admit we are not that crazy about pumpkins in Ireland so it was my first time to a pumpkin patch. It was fun! We went to Mr. Bones in West Hollywood and was surprised to see paparazzi at the entrance. We did however see Amy Adams while we were there!
Our good friends Jordan and Morgan Owen showed use how to crave pumpkins and we came up with 3 wonderful designs!

Petty Crux set design

My friend Jason is in this band called Petty Crux and they asked me to help them out doing some set design for there live performances. I made 2 amp covers and backdrop on the piano of clouds and rain. They have an amazing website and I took inspiration from it. They recently played a gig in Dakota lounge in Santa Monica and I think they set design was effective.

Culver City daytrip

This weeks daytrip with Kathlene and Tegan was to Culver City. We went to Royal T and were so surprised at how amazing and cool this place was. We got there in time to enjoy the Dine LA lunch special - delicious. The gift shop and gallery was Japanese art inspired loved it.

Pasadena DIY Holiday Class

My friend Mary Becker attended one of my embroidery classes and asked if I would do another class out near were she lived in Pasadena.
Its approaching the holiday season and I thought a DIY craft class would be fun. This class takes place on November 21st and you get to choice which of the 3 gifts you would like to make during the class. Yoyo necklace, tote bag and a baby name banner. Everyone will get to learn how to make all three and I will supply the materials for 2 of them.

Studio City daytrip

Kathlene, Tegan, Sienna and I went to Studio City for our weekly daytrip. It was an amazing and interesting part of LA that I hadn't explored yet. Two highlights were The big Sugar Bakeshop and Henry Road. We tired are weekly red velvet cupcake - delicious at the bakeshop. Henry Road was so inspiring with beautiful hand made fabrics.

At Mummy group last week we all went to the Zimmer Children's Muesum. It was great seeing Sienna begin to react to everything around here. We particularly enjoyed splashing around with her friend Emma at the water feature.
Lynne Patti organises are mummy group each Wednesday - she is such a great friend and always has great mummy advice for me whenever I need it. She has just started up her own blog and you need to check it out.

Jason's Jacket

My neighbor Jason Roswell and I went thrift store shopping last week. He found this great tuxedo jacket. The sleeves were to short so I can up with this idea of adding white cuffs from another shirt to the jacket. It turned out great and he got amazing comments from people when he wore it.
Jason is in this great band called Petty Crux and has asked me to help him come up with some great design concepts for their on stage presence. I will blog about the process!

Sienna's 1st Birthday Party - Party Dress

The last birthday party post I promise.....
It was my first attempt since Home Economics in school to use a pattern and make something. My good friend Heewon gave me this pattern as a gift and was excited to give it ago. I was really pleased with how it turned out. I added some little extras like the pink tulle petticoat and trim. Also made her some cute little hairclips too.
Don't you love Sienna's dirty feet!!!

Sienna's Birthday - Banner

I made this Happy Birthday Banner for Sienna's party. I can use it now for each family birthday celebration and it looks really original and fun.

It was really simple to make. Here are some quick instructions:

1. picked out some fun fabrics and cut them into a rectangle shape

2. traced the letters on to heat & bond no sew paper and cut them out

3. Iron letters to contrast fabric and cut them out and iron to cut out rectangles

4. Sew ribbon to edge

It was a windy day and it got blown around alot but it still looked pretty!

Sienna turns 1 tomorrow - time really does fly! We had a birthday party for her on Saturday and I made favors for her little friends to take home. Cupcake clips for the girls and rock guitar bibs for the boys!

Jet Rag is this vintage store on La Brea in West Hollywood and has a dollar sale every Sunday. You can find the post amazing items. My friend Lisa found Sienna this cute little dress and she wore it recently when it was very hot outside!
We are in the middle of preparing for Sienna's first birthday party on Saturday and I've made lots of lovely things and will be blogging about them in the coming days!

I'm part of this incredible community called Mosaic and I got to ago away over labor day weekend to their Artists weekend away. I was helping out with some fashion projects. I did an hour long workshop on alternative t-shirt design. Everyone at the weekend got a t-shirt and decided to get everyone to do some custom work using dye, stitch and embellishment. I was amazed at how well they shirts turned out.

We also got to work on our own projects and I made an outfit from recycled clothes and inspired by the word "Belong".

Silverlake daytrip

My fellow creative mummy Kathlene and I decided we would do an Mummy friday outing and explore a different part of Los Angeles each Friday until Kathlene went back to work. This was a couple of months ago but I always meant to post some photos.

Here are a few shots from Silverlake - I love this area so artistic and unique. I hope to do some more creative exploring with my husband when we take a "Staycation" at the end of the month.

Screenprinting - generoCity

For the generoCity party on Saturday I was organizing the creative experience room. Everyone got a t-shirt when they arrived at the party and they customized it in 2 different areas. !. Screenprint or 2. Embroidery. We also had areas for them to self customize with buttons etc.

I spent the day last Thursday screenprinting patches with our logo and taglines and these were than used to embroider on to the t-shirts.

Our taglines were "Who is your neighbor?" and "Fashion + Action".

generoCity Los Angeles

My husband and I was asked to get involved in this great non profit called generoCity. It combined are two talents business and design. Below is some details about it.We had our first introduction party on Saturday night and it was really successful. See other posts for details.

generoCity Mission Statement: We are a collaborative of socially minded individuals who create culture though inspiring original fashion from local designers, increasing communal awareness and fostering the generosity of every person.

It begins with a local, grassroots business by hosting themed events to showcase 'recycled fashion', developing an online network with interactive features to learn more about our local non-profit organizations, the needs of our city, and opportunities to get involved.

It develops into an Hollywood based store were we sell these 'recycled fashion' items, create a rotating showcase of our neighborhood organizations, and uniquely provide the opportunity for our designers to create openly at in-store stations where customers can interact directly.

Etsy fabric jewelry finds

I'm beginning to do some research on inspiration for my fabric jewelry class I will be teaching in a few weeks. I came across some amazing designers on Etsy and really have to share them with you.
First up is this fun brooch from Sophie Isobel Design, I love the colours and use of text. Please check out her shop as it was so hard deciding which brooch to feature as I love so many of them.
I had to feature a baby clip as my daugher Sienna's hair is finally growing and hopefully get some clips into it soon. This beautiful Peacock clip is from Pammy Dawn and I just adore it and the stitch features.
I've been particularly interested in using stitch within jewelry designs and came across MaMagasin's cross stitch flying duck. I adore it!!!
Flora Bond has the most magical necklaces pieces and I'm in LOVE with her shop. Hope to buy one of these in the near future. Please check out her shop as there are many more beautiful pieces.
